Bundi

This quiet and unassuming town oozes history and is one of the more remote and  undeveloped areas in Rajasthan. The numerous temples, Taragarh Fort and the beautiful palace, once abandoned are now re-opened for the public to explore. The rural feel is complemented by some of the most colourful and abundant fruit and vegetable markets, displaying the widest variety of produce from Rajasthan.

All this provides a more relaxed atmosphere and the perfect antidote to the many busy cities. Less traffic, less people, it's the perfect place to sit back and just breath in the history.

More from Bundi...

Stepwells of Bundi

There are over 50 baories (stepwells) in Bundi, of which only a handful have been maintained. They used to be the only source of water for the town until a piped water system was introduced. After that these stepwells were abandoned and the monuments fell into disrepair.

Bundi Palace

Bundi Palace was built during the 16th and 17th centuries and is an example of classic Rajasthani architecture. The Chitrashala (picture gallery) is open to the public and the lavish frescoes are well worth a visit.

Bundi - Taragarh Fort

Taragarh Fort (Star Fort) built in 1354, the hill underneath is crisscrossed with tunnels built to allow the Maharajah and his associates to escape if they felt the enemy was about to win, now likely to have collapsed and are inaccessible due to no map surviving.

Bundi and Kipling

Bundi is often mentioned in association with Rudyard Kipling as it was at the Sukh Mahal that Kipling was inspired and wrote part of “Kim”. Its easy to see why, Bundi has a very relaxed attitude and the lake behind the palace is full of lotus flowers, a stunning view, which is especially pretty at sunset.
