Kerala, famously described as God's Own Country for its breathtaking natural beauty, is also the land of festivals, which are sure to have you spellbound. Planning a holiday during these occasions is the best way to experience the rich cultural heritage of this alluring destination. Among the most exotic and interesting events for visitors are:

The Snake Boat Races: Kerala’s backwaters are famous for native boat races, held during the months of June and August. These races are accompanied by celebrations in the form of spectacular water floats, vanchipattu (the oarsman’s song) and decorated boats. The snake boats or Chundans are a sight to behold, with a length of over 100 feet and a raised prow. The Champakulam boat race marks the beginning of the boat racing season, followed by the Aranmula boat race and the Nehru Trophy boat race. Competition is intense, with rowers battling it out to the rhythm of rousing music.

The Elephant Pageant: Elephants are considered very auspicious in Kerala, India. Many temples raise one or more elephants for various rituals. The traditional Pooram festival, which is held every year during the months of April and May, is popular for its many and varied events. Beautifully caparisoned elephants compete in the Pooram, with spectacular fireworks and a melodic orchestra in the background.

Onasadya (Onam Festival): The Onasadya feast, held on the tenth day of the harvest festival (typically in August) every year, honors the mythical King Mahabali. The nine-course feast consists of 11 dishes, including mouth-watering curries of mustard yellow and deep red and home-made mango pickle. Kerala transforms into a pallet of colors during this time, with every house displaying magnificent floral decorations - if you are in Kerala at this time it's a 'must see'!

If you are unable to plan your trip during these months, do not worry.
