India becomes celebrity go-to destination for romance

Sumptuous chic - interior of a tent at the divine Aman-I-Khas

Nothing less than a whirlwind romance topped of with an amourous holiday in Rajasthan, which included a proposal - celebrity couple Katy Perry and Russel Brand decided it was apt that they should bring a select group of friends and family back to India for their wedding celebrations.

Widely tipped as the celebrity wedding of the year, top names flew into Jaipur this week and were whisked of in black Mercedes-Benz to Aman-i-Khas, a über-luxury tented camp on the edge of Ranthambore National Park tiger reserve. This was tabled as the venue for the pre-wedding party with at least 30 of the couple's closes friends and family.

The wedding itself, according to pundits was due to take place at the legendary Rambagh Palace (hotel) near the centre of Jaipur. But as the day drew nearer and hotel staff remained tight lipped about the arrangements, Katy and Russel had pulled of a public relations masterstroke and in fact remained at Aman-I-Khas and were married there. Subsequent coverage was widely speculative, reporting that the ceremony had been a traditional Hindu ceremony (traditionally reserved only for Hindus) when in fact it was in essence a Christian wedding, ministered by a friend of the 'Perry' family.

Aman-I-Khas, a unique resort and part of niche luxury hotelier, the Aman Group, offers modern safari luxury styling and first class dining. The upscale safari experience is enhanced by guaranteed seclusion, which is all-important with the eyes of the world hungry for a glimpse inside Katy and Russell's private celebrity world.

The wedding wasn't without its hiccups though with "minders" being officially cautioned for lashing out at local photographers a little too eager to get a valuable shot of the entourage.

The star couple's affinity with India is not hard to understand. As one of the most vibrant and culturally rich destinations on the planet, it offers an unsurpassed mix of luxury and experiences, not to mention rising credibility as one of the hottest high-end travel destinations.

Expect to see many more celebrity couples drawn to the romance of the subcontinent, following the path of recent visitors to Rajasthan, Seal and Heidi Klum, who slipped unnoticed into India earlier in the year for a romantic getaway.
