Deogarh Mahal

Adding a very personal touch

A heritage property worthy of the luxury lable

Nestled between Jodphur and Udaipur and at the very heart of Rajasthan, is the ultimate gem for all luxury travellers - Deogarh Mahal. A 17th century Mewari fort that once sat at the centre of one of Rajasthan’s largest feudal empires, today it is a heritage hotel, renowned for its hospitality, stylish suites and delicious food - all setting the standard to which other properties might only aspire.

You can read online the numerous glowing reports of guests who have had a fantastic stay at Deogarh Mahal, the rave reviews just keep on coming. But you really have to experience it in order to truly understand exactly how the Rawat of Devgarh and his family create an ambiance that leaves you yearning for more and wishing you had booked those few extra nights.

Steeped in history, the building itself - brightly painted in a warm ochre, immediately sets the tone for the rest of your stay. The conversion from an inhabited palace to a functioning hotel takes time and a sympathetic eye, which is exactly what you’ll find here. A series of narrow passages and stairways, worn away over time by villagers who would have taken this route to pay taxes or seek justice from the ruling nobility, lead to the rooms which are each unique. There’s no lack of modern comforts, but the original character and features of the property have most definitely been preserved, whilst raising the overall quality of the accommodation. A rare feat, even in Rajasthan.

The hotel has 50 rooms (three Royal Suites, two Studio Suites, 23 Deluxe Suites and 22 Deluxe Rooms) each reflective of a different era. While visiting, guests should also take a trip to Room 206 or as it is more affectionately known Kishnan Kunj. In remembrance of Kishnan Singh, this room pays homage to Lord Krishna, his favourite Hindu deity. A ceiling covered in stars and original stained glass windows makes this room truly magical. There’s plenty of space outside of the rooms, so take time to explore the rooftops and other nooks and crannies dotted about the place.

Central to any stay at Deogarh Mahal are the range of activities on offer, each one helping you explore the local area. The list seems endless and you might easily find yourself riding on a small rural railway, crusing along in one of the Rawat’s classic cars at sunset, or sipping tea whilst on a bird watching foray. And of course, there’s the lotus shaped pool and the spa to take advantage of too.

In the evening visitors can sample a delicious seasonal menu, including Mewari cuisine as well as international options. Fruit and vegetables are grown on site to ensure a plateful of fresh flavours and vibrant colours making mealtimes an absolute joy, especially when you’re sitting in the courtyard under a canopy of stars. The jams and marmalades served at breakfast are also available to buy and make wonderful gifts to take home.

But what Deogarh Mahal really excels at is service. Not many hotels can boast a more friendly and helpful staff and visionary management. It’s the insight and understanding of their guests and ability to anticipate these long before you’ve even arrived that keep Deogarh Mahal at the forefront of heritage hospitality. A family that plies it’s trade deftly, they are not affraid to make changes and innovate to compete in a world where the word heritage itself has been widely misappropriated. Such passion and dedication is what makes this a real must-see luxury location during any trip to Rajasthan if not India.

The only drawback to Deogarh Mahal is its massive popularity, so make sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Rack rates start from €130 per night for a double room.

This is all so true, we stayed three nights at Deogarh Mahal and had an absolutely wonderful time! They even have a tour through the palace and you get to know so much about its history. The food was amazing and the staff brilliant!
